Providing a Medical Lifeline in Rural Ecuador

In the remote corners of Ecuador, access to basic healthcare remains a significant challenge. For families in rural communities, the journey to the nearest healthcare facility can be daunting — both in terms of distance and cost. Enter the Legacy+ Mobile Medical Brigades Program: a lifeline for thousands, bringing essential healthcare services directly to those who need them most.

Why Mobile Health Clinics Matter

In rural Ecuador, particularly in the Amazon region, the statistics paint a sobering picture:

  • 75% of people drink contaminated water, leading to widespread illnesses.

  • 42% of families live in poverty, earning less than $90 per month, with 25% facing extreme poverty living on less than $50 monthly.

  • 45% of children under five suffer from anemia, while 25% face chronic malnutrition.

  • 80% of children are born at home, often without medical assistance.

Women and children bear the brunt of these hardships. Malnutrition, anemia, and parasitic infections are common among children, while women face high rates of violence and limited access to prenatal care. In such an environment, mobile health clinics are not just helpful — they’re indispensable.

Community Impact

In 2024, a grant provided by Altruisity brought new hope to rural areas like Los Rios and surrounding communities with a mobile health clinic providing clinic visits that tackled pressing health concerns in 71 communities.

  • Children received vaccinations, growth assessments, and anemia checks.

  • Adults accessed treatments for diseases and infections.

  • Many experienced their first-ever dental care through the clinics.

Beyond direct care, the program invested in sustainable solutions. Midwives received extensive training, ensuring safer home births. Community members learned health practices, from hygiene to self-care, empowering them to take charge of their well-being.

Beyond Medical Care

Mobile Medical Brigades do more than treat illnesses. They build resilience by addressing systemic issues, such as gender-based violence, access to essential supplies, and Community coordination.

Expansion

in 2025, we expanded this effort to support  90 communities. Each visit not only saves lives but also fosters a healthier, more informed community equipped to thrive despite the challenges of their environment.

To date, the impact of this program includes:

  • 1,150 people have received medial care

  • 3,000 people have benefitted from health education

  • 5,000 students were provided with dental care

  • 101 schools received health and wellness education and training.

This is a testament to what’s possible when we partner to empower good. By supporting the Legacy+ Mobile Medical Brigade, Altruisity and the dedicated healthcare professionals on the ground, have assured thousands of Ecuadorians now have a chance at healthier, more hopeful futures.
